The Salamanders come from behind to plate four runs in the seventh inning to take their first lead of the game. However, a key two run single by Christian Avant with two outs in the eighth inning answers the call for the Tobs delivering a tough 7 – 6 loss to the Salamanders Monday night at Ting Park.
The leadoff walk became the nemesis for the Salamanders throughout the evening. The Tobs lead off the first, fourth, and eighth innings with a walk. Each of those base runners would score in the contest and make up the winning difference on the night.
The Tobs would go ahead 3 – 0 in the first inning with two of the runs coming from a Christian Avant line drive double to right. The Salamanders would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the second inning when Chris Crabtree lead off with a double to right centerfield. Nick Lucky would then follow Crabtree with his first home run of the summer. The Tobs added runs in the fourth and fifth inning bringing a 5 – 2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Salamanders would then come alive plating four runs in the seventh inning with three of those runs coming with two outs. Itchy Burts, Ian Bailey, and Jake Holtzapple delivered key base hits putting the Salamanders up for the first time of the game 6 – 5. However, the lead would be short lived as the Tobs would score two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Christian Avant delivered a two out single scoring Chase Wullenweber and Kevin Jordan. Tobs pitchers Josh Arnold and Taylor Soper would close out the game with a final score of 7-6.
The Salamanders have a short night as they will be back at Ting Park tomorrow morning to face the Wilmington Sharks with a 10:30 first pitch on Education Day. The Tobs will be back in Wilson to face the Peninsula Pilots tomorrow evening with a 7:00 pm start.
